What Is Roblox?
Roblox is not a single game β it's a platformwhere users create and play millions of user-generated βexperiencesβ (games). Anyone can build a game in Roblox Studio and publish it. This creates an incredible creative environment β and a massive safety problem. There's no way to vet every experience.
The Risks
Inappropriate User-Generated Content
Some experiences contain sexual content, violence, or disturbing themes despite age ratings. Moderation can't catch everything.
Private Messaging
Kids can receive DMs from anyone. Predators use this to initiate grooming. You can disable this, but it's not default.
Voice Chat
Launched in 2021 with weak age verification. Real-time voice communication with strangers.
In-Game Currency Exploitation
Robux can be gifted or traded. Predators use financial grooming β giving gifts to build trust and obligation.
Condo Games
Sexually explicit experiences ('condos') are constantly created. Roblox bans them but new ones appear daily.
Moving Off-Platform
Predators befriend kids in Roblox, then move the conversation to Discord, Snapchat, or WhatsApp where there's no game-level moderation.
States Are Suing
Texas (Nov 2025), Iowa (Dec 2025), Indiana (May 2026), and LA County (Feb 2026) have all filed lawsuits against Roblox alleging the platform knowingly fails to protect children. These aren't fringe claims β they're state attorneys general bringing evidence of exploitation happening on the platform.
How to Make Roblox Safer
Mandatory Safety Settings
- βEnable Account Restrictions: Settings β Parental Controls β Account Restrictions (limits chat and experiences)
- βSet Experience Age Rating: Restrict to age-appropriate experiences only (9+, 13+, or All Ages)
- βDisable Chat: Settings β Privacy β Who can chat with me β No one
- βDisable Private Messaging: Settings β Privacy β Who can message me β No one
- βSet a Parental PIN: Prevents your child from changing settings
- βReview Monthly Report: Roblox emails a summary of your child's activity
- βRestrict Spending: Set monthly spend limits for Robux
Age Recommendations
Under 9: No
Roblox is not appropriate for children this young even with safety settings enabled. The social features are too advanced and the content too unpredictable.
Ages 9β12: With Heavy Restrictions
Enable ALL safety settings listed above. Disable chat and messaging entirely. Play with them periodically to understand what they're seeing. Check friend lists weekly.
Ages 13+: With Monitoring
You can enable some social features but still restrict private messages from strangers. Have ongoing conversations about online safety and who they're talking to.
The Bottom Line
Roblox canbe safe for kids β but only if parents actively configure safety settings and monitor usage. The platform's default settings are not safe for children. Don't assume Roblox is handling safety for you. You have to take control.
